Understanding the Current War with Iran

    Abstract

This lesson helps students understand the current war between Israel and Iran in simple terms. It covers the actors involved (Iran, Israel, United States), the causes and historical context (since 1979), different perspectives on the conflict, the protection systems in place in Israel (Iron Dome, shelters), and concludes with a story about Purim during war – ‘Choosing Life’.

    • Help children understand what is happening in simple terms
    • Recognize that different people may see wars differently
    • Reduce anxiety and instill pride by explaining the protection systems and community support in Israel
    1. Opening – ‘What Do You Know?’: Students share or write responses on sticky notes or in notebooks. Teacher collects ideas and keywords on the board.
    2. Who-What-Where-Why-When: Presentation of actors (Iran, Israel, United States), geographic context, facts and historical context since 1979.
    3. Seeing the War from Different Perspectives: Reasons given by people who support or oppose the US/Israel attack on Iran.
    4. The ways in which Israel protects its people: Home Front Command (Pikud Haoref), warning sirens, safe rooms/shelters, Iron Dome.
    5.  Closing: Purim during war – ‘Choosing Life’: Story of Purim celebrations in shelters in Tel Aviv.
    • Whiteboard or slide presentation
    • Sticky notes or student notebooks
    • Map of the Middle East
    • QR code (provided in document) for the safe rooms/shelters video

Human Timeline: Create and distribute 10 cards with names of events and 10 cards with corresponding years. Students arrange themselves in chronological order.

Map Investigation: Give small groups a map of the Middle East to observe the size, distance, and location of Israel and Iran.

Newsroom Simulation: Divide students into groups (‘news teams’), each group interviewing a different character (Israeli child, Pikud Haoref officer, Iranian citizen, President Trump, American teenager).
