1948: Israel’s Battle for Independence

Abstract

No one expected the new State of Israel to stand its ground and defeat the multiple Arab armies who attacked in 1948. While Israel did win the War of Independence, the victory came at great cost. What were the consequences of the war for the Jews  and the Palestinian residents? What were the necessary next steps to build up the new country? Thought provoking discussion prompts and engaging learning activities such as stepping in David Ben Gurion’s shoes and attempting to address the challenges that he faced, are featured in this resource.

The learner will:

  1. understand the factors that moved the newly established state of Israel  to great sacrifice and the consequences of being victorious

  2. know the events leading up to and during the War of Independence

  3. be able to make a list of the top five priorities for Israel’s prime minister after the victory of the War of Independence and explain why they chose those priorities
