Context of the war with Iran – Guidance for educators

    Abstract

The document provides an introductory overview for teachers to understand the current conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States. Its purpose is to give contextual information that helps teachers address students’ questions in an age-appropriate way.

It first explains the geographic location of Israel and Iran in the Middle East. Iran is about 75 times larger than Israel, does not share a border with it, and is located about 1,000–1,500 km away. Israel has about 10 million inhabitants, while Iran has around 90 million.

The document then outlines a historical timeline of relations between the two countries. After the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, Iran maintained relations with Israel under the Shah. Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the new regime led by Ayatollah Khomeini declared Israel illegitimate and adopted a strongly anti-Western position. Iran also supports armed groups hostile to Israel and develops nuclear technology contested by Israel and the United States.

A second timeline describes recent escalation: the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023; the first direct Iranian attack on Israel in 2024; Israeli air strikes on Iranian military facilities; and the 2025 operation “Am KeLavi,” involving Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets and Iranian retaliation with missiles and drones. The United States also enters the conflict by bombing Iranian nuclear facilities, while Iran fires missiles at a U.S. base in Qatar. The conflict lasts twelve days before a ceasefire.

The document also presents the declared objectives of President Trump: destroying Iran’s ballistic missile infrastructure and nuclear program, eliminating the leadership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and neutralizing regional groups supported by Iran.

Finally, it summarizes the first week of the operation “Lion Roaring,” including large-scale strikes on Iran, Iranian missile and drone attacks on Israel, and attacks on U.S. military bases in the region. In Israel, sirens are activated, schools close, gatherings are restricted, and the Iron Dome defense system is used to intercept incoming missiles.
