Abstract

How essential is the Land of Israel to Zionism? Therodo Herzl, after witnessing the antisemitism that European Jews were experiencing, proposed the temporary establishment of a Jewish homeland in Uganda. However, there were many who heavily opposed this suggestion. When is it preferable to detour from a goal in service of a greater good? In this resource students re-enact the debate that took place at the Zionist Cogress and have the opportunity to vote on whether or not the 20th century Jews should make Uganda their temporary home.
