The Sykes-Picot Agreement & the San Remo Conference
Abstract
Chaim Weitzmann said, “This is the most momentous political event in the history of our movement and in the history of our people since our exile from our homeland.” What was Weitzmann referring to? Surprisingly, it wasn’t the UN vote or Ben Gurion’s declaration of the state; it was actually the 1922 San Remo Conference. What did this conference achieve that was so “momentous” for the future Jewish state? In this lesson, learners will study the history of the San Remo Conference as well as its relationship to the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916. After uncovering the significance of these two diplomatic events and the impact they had and continue to have on the Arab-Israeli conflict, students will take a deep dive into the complex and highly controversial issues underlying Israel’s very right to exist as a sovereign nation, and debate the significance and legitimacy of the varying diplomatic agreements.
