Although the song was written before this war, a new version was recorded and a new video with
drawings of children from Otef Aza, was produced at the end of October. Songwriter Noam
Horev’s cousin was killed before his 7th birthday. He recalls how before blowing out the candles,
his heart was torn between wishing for a dog or wishing to not see his mother cry anymore. This
is the reality of Israeli children, who like all children wish to go to Disneyland, to get new sneakers,
to meet a celebrity and in the same breath are wishing that the hostages be returned, or their
brother returns from Gaza, or that they won’t need to run for shelter. At the end of the song, there
is an excerpt from Uzi Hitman’s famous song “Elohim Sheli.”
While Watching
“Watch and Catch” – Give the children a bank of images (like “I spy”) that they will see and have
them put a check next to an image every time they see (“catch”) one
“Word Cloud” – Similar to “watch and catch” but instead of focusing on images, this activity focuses
on the words that they will hear or see.
Worsheets Provided
After Watching
“Magnetic Poetry” – Have students cut up the lyrics of the song or just the words that you identified
from the word cloud and have them write their own prayer or poem using these same words in a
different order. You can also allow them to add their own words as needed. Students must use at
least 5 of the original words.
“Image Collage” – Each student receives a blank square and must choose just one of the images
from the “watch & catch” activity and fill their square with their own drawing of that image and
connect it to their own personal prayer. Display all the squares together as a collage.
