Abstract
What does it mean to ‘keep kosher”? Before studying the biblical sources of kashrut, students will brainstorm their prior knowledge about what is involved in keeping kosher and then watch an engaging video about keeping kosher. To support the students’ own research on kashrut, the class can look up the hyperlinked sources on the featured graph (see the source section of the resource) and complete the table, filling in the laws they find in the text. Study of the biblical text is supported by suggested text analysis skills such as “Rapid Fire Writing,” a structured protocol that teaches learners how to unpack their understanding of a text, “Close Viewing Protocol,” which has students write down personal takeaways, questions and reactions to the text or video, and others.
The learner will:

Understand how they relate to the mitzvah of Kashrut, whether they observe it or not

know the sources for the laws of Kashrut and what “keeping kosher” involves

be able to summarize some laws of kashrut as indicated in the Torah
