Did you know that Jewish communities were established in India and China well over 800 years ago? What brought Jews to these locations? What happened to these Jewish communities? Are the descendants of these communities still Jewish? This resource explores the origins and destinies of these far flung Jewish communities, and uncovers some of the challenges they faced. Students will grapple with thought provoking questions about Jewish identity and be able to debate about this complex issue.
The learners will:
understand the challenges, both personal and communal, that arise as a result of living in the diaspora
know how and why Jews arrived in China and India and what became of the communities that were established there..
be able to compare and contrast the experiences of Jews living in these two communities to their own life experiences as Jews.
