Finding New Meaning in Kashrut for the Modern Age

Abstract

Do you find the laws of kashrut relevant and meaningful to you in your life? How can what you eat be an expression of your values? In this lesson, learners will study a variety of contemporary Jewish approaches to kashrut that strive to find new meaning in the laws of kashrut and ensure its relevance to modern times. Thought provoking discussion prompts, such as whether it is important to insert new ethical values into our kashrut practice, enable students to think critically about each of the sources. Learners can divide into small groups and debate which approach is most meaningful to them and explain why that is the case.

The learner will:

  1. Understand how the laws of Kashrut have timeless relevance

  1. know a variety of contemporary Jewish thinkers’ approaches to finding new meaning in kashrut

  2. be able to articulate how kashrut is meaningful to them
