The Legacy of Rav Kook
Abstract
The State of Israel has faced conflicts between religious and secular society from the outset of the Zionism movement. Despite this, Rav Abraham Issac Kook (1865-1935) believed that the contributions of both the secular and religious communities were essential for the Jewish people to succeed. Was Rav Kook able to bridge the gap or did he end up stuck in the middle? This resource introduces learners to Rav Kook’s world view as well as to the challenges that he faced in pursuit of actualizing it. In addition to thought provoking discussion prompts, students will research modern movements that follow in Rav Kook’s footsteps and explain how these organizations are continuing Rav Kook’s vision for unity amongst religious and secular Jews .
The learners will:

understand the complexities of Rav Kook’s choice to be committed to religious practice as well as to the secular Zionism movement

know the ways in which Rav Kook worked to bring religious and secular Jews closer together

be able to create an “action plan” as to how they as individuals and as a group can continue Rav Kook’s work on bridging the gap between different types of Jews in their schools and communities.
