The Birth of Islam: Muhammad and the Jews

Abstract

The relationship between Jews and Muslims has been a rocky one for many years, yet there were many centuries in which Jewish communities lived comfortably in Moslem countries. The lesson explores the origins of Islam and how it impacted the Jews living under Islamic rule. A variety of prompts and short articles that enable student discussion about the challenging dynamics of the Jewish- Muslim relationship are incorporated into this resource.

The learners will:

  1. understand the complexities of the Jewish – Muslim relationship as well as why seeking common ground is important

  2. know the basic tenets of Islam and how the rise of Islam effected the Jews living during the 7th century

be able to contextualize the current status of the Jewish-Muslim relationship into its historical origins and articulate how this impacts their opinion as to how to navigate Jewish-Muslim dialogue today.
