Superheroes – גיבורי-על

    Abstract

This song by Israel reggae and pop band Hatikva Shesh, was inspired by the words written in a November Facebook post by educator Asaf Peri. The song is dedicated to all of the Israelis who appear to be “regular people” but who are really hidden “superheroes” because they are prepared to drop everything and take on their military roles to defend their homeland. The current war has required Israel’s greatest mobilzation of reservists – numbering approximately 350,000 men and women.

    While Watching

    • Depending on Hebrew level, you may want to give students the lyrics to some of the song and leave the last word of each lines for them to try and fill in for themselves. They can collaborate with partners to try to get all the lyrics.
    • Tell the students you will pause the video at three points to ask questions based on their note-taking:

0-1:02 min: Students should take notes on where they think the video was filmed and give evidence (Tel Aviv – shuk, tayelet, Israeli flag, bicycles, surfers, beach, buildings). Pause after first minute to hear their answers.

1:02-2:09 min: In this part of the video, the band is seen playing together on a Tel Aviv rooftop. Ask students to jot down how many musicians there are in the band and what different instruments are played. Pause after second minute to hear their answers.

2:10-3:07 min: Ask students to pay attention to what symbols of the Israeli army are seen in this last minute of the video (berets and tank)

    After Watching

    • Have students write an additional verse to the song describing other people they consider to be Israeli “superheroes”
    • The song refers to well-known Israeli singer and actor Idan Amedi. Despite his celebrity status, Amedi was called to serve as a reserve soldier in the current war. In January 2023, Amedi was seriously injured during a bombing operation in Gaza. In a press conference, Amedi said: “People tell me I am a hero and symbol, but I am just one of everyone… The Israeli people are the strongest in the world. When we are united, we are invincible. We will win this war…Am Yisrael Chai.” Have students create an Instagram profile page for Idan Amedi (or a different Israeli hero of their choice), including photos, posts, hashtags and quotes.
