“News for Kids” UnitEd Video Series

Abstract

Suggested Classroom Techniques for Using the Broadcasts: “News for Kids”

“News for Kids” video broadcasts are produced by UnitEd to provide current news and topics about the Israel war geared especially for younger grades.

Each episode of between 3-4.5 minutes explains a single subject in clear, digestible, and positive ways that are age appropriate and emotionally sensitive.

Below are some suggestions on how teachers can integrate these video clips into their instruction. We assume the teacher has first reviewed the clip carefully.

Suggested Classroom Techniques for Using the Broadcasts: “News for Kids”

Emphasize student active learning rather than merely being a passive observer.

The viewing of the film then reinforces the prior learning they engaged in.

  1. Prior to screening the episode with students, first introduce the clip by sharing what is the topic they are about to view.
  2. To help ensure better focus and attention, task students with a related activity while viewing the broadcast. For example, before viewing the ‘Flag’ episode ask students to count the total number of flags that they see throughout the clip. In the ‘Borders’ episode ask students to notice how many (and which) countries border Israel.
  3. Prior to viewing an episode, engage students in conversation about the topic they are about to watch. Beginning the lesson this way places much more emphasis on student active-learning than merely being a passive observer. The viewing of the film then reinforces the prior learning they engaged in. Let us illustrate with the episode on ‘Volunteerism.’ First, conduct a conversation with students about the ways they have either – seen, participated in, or can suggest for non-IDF soldiers, both in Israel and in the Diaspora, help Israel while she wages this war against her enemies. The conversation should generate robust discussion on the topic with, ultimately, the watching of the clip serving to reinforce prior learning.
  4. Alternatively, use the film as a trigger. View the episode first and then carry on the conversation about its contents and ways that they personally connect with subject being discussed.
  5. Do not hesitate in pausing the clip in the middle. As the teacher, you might very well need to check for comprehension partway in. Pausing the film to quiz students in the middle helps ensure that they comprehend its contents.
  6. After viewing the episode introduce an activity related to the episode. Some illustrations: Making the flag of Israel or decorating the school with Israeli flags after viewing the episode on “Flags.’ Writing a letter to Israeli soldiers after watching one of the episodes related to the IDF or volunteerism, etc.

UnitEd has and is developing magazine issues to accompany the video broadcasts.  Use these magazine issues for expanded depth on each subject and draw from its suggested activities.
